Periodontal Assessment

The most beautiful smile will not endure unless the supporting gum tissues are healthy.  Gum tissues that are pink and firm helps keep your teeth strong, insuring the best possible long term results.  A thorough periodontal assessment is a key part of an oral health evaluation.  It helps us determine the conditions of the underlying foundation before any dental care is initiated.  Unhealthy gums will not support healthy teeth.  Should any problem areas be discover, appropriate treatment will be recommended.

Oral Cancer Detection

Most of our patients are surprised to discover that oral cancer is diagnosed in over 30,000 people each year in the United States and that half of those diagnosed die within 5 years. That is more than many other types of cancer that receive more attention in the media and in medicine. Oral cancer's biggest threat is that many times it is not detected early enough.
In the past, a traditional oral cancer exam consisted of looking at and feeling the tissue in and around the mouth. Modern technology, however, has given us an even better way to detect oral cancer in its earliest stages.
In addition to the traditional oral cancer exam, the doctor recommends each patient have a ViziLite® exam done each year. The ViziLite exam consists of an oral rinse and a special light that helps identify any abnormalities in the tissue in your mouth. ViziLite helps identify oral cancer at its earliest stages which can mean the difference between life and death.
Make sure to have a ViziLite exam done each year for your health and your life.

Tooth-Colored Fillings & Bonding

Once decay is removed from a tooth, it can be restored with material commonly referred to as a "filling." In the past, traditional fillings were made of different types of metals like amalgam or gold which are strong but much darker in color than your natural teeth.
Today, teeth can be restored using modern materials including ceramic and plastic compounds called composite resins that look and feel like natural teeth.

Bonding is a conservative way to repair slightly chipped, discolored, or crooked teeth. A white filling is placed and bonded onto your tooth to improve its function and appearance. The filling "bonds" with your teeth, and because it comes in a variety of tooth-colored shades it closely matches the appearance of your natural teeth.

Bonding is also used with modern tooth-colored fillings instead of using black, mercury amalgam fillings that were widely used in the past. Bonded fillings can be used on front and back teeth depending on the location and extent of the area to be restored.  Because of the strength of modern adhesives and the tooth-colored restorations available today, bonding is just one more way you can retain the natural look and feel of your smile.

Bridges

A dental bridge may be used to fill the space(s) left by missing teeth. A bridge helps maintain the full function of your teeth and mouth and the look of your smile.
A bridge is attached to the teeth on either side of a missing tooth or teeth. The space that the bridge spans is filled with natural looking artificial teeth. A bridge can be made of a combination of gold, alloys, and porcelain for strength and natural appearance.
The success of any bridge depends on its foundation — the other teeth to which it is attached. Therefore, it's very important to keep your existing teeth, gums, and jaw healthy and strong.

Root Canals

In the past, if you had a tooth with a diseased nerve, you'd probably lose that tooth. Today, with a special dental procedure called root canal treatment, you may save that tooth.
Inside each tooth is both the pulp and nerve that was important for tooth development. Once removed, it is replaced with materials that seal off the root canal from its supporting structures.
When a tooth is cracked or has a deep cavity, bacteria can enter the pulp. Germs can cause an infection inside the tooth. Left without treatment, pus builds up at the root tip in the jawbone, forming a "pus-pocket" called an abscess. An abscess can cause the pulp tissue to die. When the infected pulp is not removed, pain and swelling can result. Certain by-products of the infection can injure your jawbones and your overall health. Without treatment, your tooth may have to be removed.
Treatment often involves from one to three visits. During treatment, your general dentist or endodontist (a dentist who specializes in problems of the pulp) removes the diseased pulp. Next the pulp chamber and root canal(s) of the tooth are cleaned and sealed. Often posterior teeth that have endodontic treatment should have a cast crown placed in order to strengthen the remaining structure. Then, as long as you continue to care for your teeth and gums with regular brushing, flossing, and checkups so that the root(s) of the restored tooth are nourished by the surrounding tissues, your restored tooth can last a lifetime.
Most of the time a root canal is a relatively simple procedure with little or no discomfort, involving one to three visits. Best of all, it can save your tooth and your smile!

Dental Implants

If you have missing teeth, it is crucial to replace them. Without all your teeth, chewing and eating can destabilize your bite, weaken your other teeth and cause you discomfort. When teeth are missing, your mouth can shift and even cause your face to look older. Implants are a great way to replace your missing teeth.
An implant is a new tooth made of steel and porcelain that looks just like your natural tooth or better! Your implant is composed of two parts that mimic a tooth's root and crown. The implant's "root" is a titanium steel rod placed into the jaw bone to act as a root. Once the rod is in place, a porcelain crown is attached to replace the top part of your tooth.
Implants may also be used to anchor dentures, especially lower dentures that tend to shift when you talk or chew. Plus, for patients with removable partial dentures, implants can replace missing teeth so that you have a more natural-looking smile.

Porcelain Veneers

There's no reason to put up with gaps in your teeth or with teeth that are stained, discolored, badly shaped, chipped, or crooked. Today, a veneer placed on top of your teeth can correct nature's mistake or the results of an injury and help you have a beautiful smile. Veneers are a highly popular solution because of their lifelike tooth appearance.
Veneers are thin, custom-made "shells" crafted of tooth-colored materials (such as porcelain) designed to cover the front side of your teeth. To prepare for veneers, your doctor will create a unique model of your teeth. This model is sent to the dental technician to create your veneers. Before placing your new veneer, your doctor will remove a small amount of your tooth to make room for the veneer.
When placed, you'll be pleased to see an attractive smile that looks and feels like you have always wanted.
Contact us today for your consultation and to see what type of veneer will give you the look, feel, and function that you want.

Dental Crowns

Crowns are a restoration used to improve your tooth's strength, function, shape, and appearance. Crowns are most often used for teeth that are broken, worn, or have portions destroyed by tooth decay.
Crowns are "caps" cemented onto an existing tooth which fully cover the portion of your tooth above the gum line. In effect, the crown becomes your tooth's new outer surface. Crowns can be made of porcelain, metal, or both. Depending on the location of your tooth, we can recommend the best options based on the goals you have for your health and appearance of your smile.
Your crown is created in a lab from your unique tooth impression which allows a dental laboratory technician to examine all aspects of your bite and jaw movements. Your crown is then sculpted just for you so that your bite and jaw movements function normally once the crown is placed.
Crowns are one of the most common dental restorations and can improve the function and appearance of a tooth as well as prolong its useful life.
